An interactive Mindfulness Meditation blogI am not the only one.
“Now, a disciple of the noble one considers this: ‘I am not the only one who is sure to become old… But wherever beings come and go —pass away and re-arise — they all are subject to old age…When a noble disciple often reflects on these facts, the path arises and he/she regularly pursues, develops and cultivates that path. As while doing so the fetters are abandoned, the obsessions and underlying tendencies are destroyed.
World lings are disgusted by other beings who share in our common nature. By those afflicted by ageing… When I live for a higher aim it is unfitting for me to loathe such pitiful beings.”
One of the greatest benefits of this contemplation is the empathy and compassion, patience and understanding you develop for not only yourself but for all living beings. Think about all the times you may have become impatient with an elderly driver; think about all the commercials and programs you see on T.V. that glorify youth and horrify aging. Our society struggles mightily with ageism and for the most part we are disgusted by it. This contemplation, if done by everyone, could revolutionize our societies and help us develop into compassionate and empathetic people who tenderly care for those who are more advanced in an experience we will one day encounter.
The phrase “I am not the only one” is the door to empathy. It is what saves us from self pity and the roots of discrimination. It throws the millionaire in with the penniless, the beautiful with the ugly, and the wise with the foolish. It is what binds us together and what can help us find true happiness and peace.
This is how the path to liberation is developed and cultivated. Today, take time to think “I am not the only one who will experience ageing. I cannot hate myself for the natural experience of ageing I will undergo. I cannot be disgusted with my fellow beings who share this experience with me. I am not alone and I will live to help others realize that they are not alone either.”
May you ever be well, happy and peaceful!
